Investing in Kansas Research
The U.S. National Science Foundation uses EPSCoR to improve the R&D competitiveness of researchers and institutions within eligible jurisdictions, which includes Kansas and roughly 25 other states and territories. Kansas has a five-year flagship initiative known as ARISE that reaches every congressional district in Kansas to build resilient water, energy, and transportation infrastructure. In 2026, at least 16 NSF projects were co-funded by EPSCoR. These projects span a host of programs, from plant genome research to geophysics to algebra.
EPSCoR frequently partners with other NSF programs to support proposals. These projects successfully completed NSF's merit review process and were recommended for funding but need additional funds to move forward. Through this co-funding model, EPSCoR extends the impact of its investments and promotes greater involvement of scientists and engineers from EPSCoR jurisdictions in NSF programs and strategic initiatives.
