This month the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) is featuring Dr. Lígia Souza as one of 10 Hispanic and Latinx Month Honorees.
“The Societies are honoring several of our recent award winners – looking to the future of our sciences,” says the SSSA website. Lígia is being recognized because of her student award at last year’s SSSA conference.
For the past four years, Lígia investigated soils at the University of Kansas with funding from the Kansas NSF EPSCoR initiative called “Microbiomes of Aquatic, Plant, and Soil Systems Across Kansas.” Her research helped understand how soil biogeochemical cycles respond to climate change and human activity, as described here.
After earning her doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology last May with guidance from Professor Sharon Billings, Lígia moved from Kansas to Canada. She now works as a postdoctoral fellow at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
