A spring 2025 course called Community Data Labs is now recruiting college students interested in gaining data science skills. These labs are organized by the Kansas Data Science Consortium for undergraduate upperclassman or graduate students at the following schools in Kansas:
  • University of Kansas
  • Kansas State University
  • Wichita State University
  • Baker University
  • Johnson County Community College
  • Butler Community College
Students in this capstone-style course learn how to analyze real data for a wide-range of projects — from apprenticeships to the performing arts, groundwater to broadband, and much more. Students also get to present at a conference in April, connecting with potential future employers and building professional skills.

The Kansas Data Science Consortium is part of ARISE, a major statewide initiative in Kansas funded by the National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) and the Kansas Board of Regents. EPSCoR is one of NSF’s longest running and politically popular programs. Its goal is to create science opportunities in regions of the country lagging in scientific research investment.
